What to Expect in Our 20 Minutes Together

This is a low-pressure conversation designed to help you feel confident about your next steps—whether that's working with me or exploring other options.

Here's what we'll cover:

    • What's bringing you to therapy right now

    • What you're hoping will be different in your life

    • A bit about your family background and current struggles

    • What you've tried before (if anything)

    • Your goals for therapy

    • My approach and how generational growth therapy works

    • What working together would look like (session frequency, process, timeline)

    • Insurance, fees, or payment options

    • Scheduling and logistics

    • Anything else on your mind

    • Clarity on whether this is the right approach for you

    • A sense of whether we're a good fit

    • Clear next steps (if you decide to move forward)

    • A therapy session (we won't dive deep into your story yet)

    • A sales pitch (I won't pressure you to commit)

    • A test you can fail (there are no wrong answers)

It's simply a conversation. You get to decide what happens next.

Before We Meet: Two Simple Steps

You don't need to prepare a speech or have everything figured out. But these two steps will make our conversation more productive:

    • Contact your insurance company before the consultation to confirm:

      • Your copay for therapy sessions

      • Whether your deductible has been met

      • How many sessions are covered per year

Not sure what to ask? Use the insurance script on the [Fees & Insurance page →]

Knowing this information helps us discuss cost clearly during the consultation.

    • Once I accept your consultation request, you'll receive access to your client portal. Inside, you'll find a short consultation form that asks about your current struggles and what you're hoping to achieve.

This form helps me: Understand your situation before we talk, so we can use our 20 minutes efficiently.

It's optional but helpful. If you don't complete it, that's okay—we'll cover it during the consultation.

That's it. No homework. No extensive prep. Just those two steps if they apply to you.

Ready to Book? Here's How

Booking your free 20-minute consultation takes about 3 minutes. Here's the process:

    • You'll be directed to my secure client portal.

    • You'll see my availability calendar. Choose a time that works for you—Tuesdays, Wednesdays, or Thursdays between 1-8 PM EST.

  • You'll be asked to briefly describe what's bringing you to therapy. A few sentences is perfect—you don't need to share your whole story yet.

  • Name, email address, and phone number. If you plan to use insurance, you'll also enter your insurance information here.

  • Once you submit, I'll receive your consultation request. I'll review it and send you a confirmation email, usually within 24 hours.

  • The confirmation email will include:

    • Your consultation date and time

    • A link to your client portal

    • The optional consultation form (if you'd like to complete it before we meet)

That's it. Simple, secure, and straightforward.

After the Consultation: Your Next Steps

Here's what happens after our conversation, depending on what feels right for you:

  • 1. We'll schedule your first session

You'll choose a time that works for your schedule—weekly or biweekly sessions, Tuesdays through Thursdays, 1-8 PM EST.

    2. You'll complete intake paperwork

Through your client portal, you'll fill out standard intake forms (consent, privacy practices, background information).

    3. You'll pay for your first session

You'll receive an invoice before your first appointment. Once paid, your session is confirmed.

    4. We begin your generational growth journey

In your first full session (50 minutes), we'll dive deeper into your story, family patterns, and what you want to change. From there, we work together at your pace.

  • That's completely okay. There's no pressure to decide during the consultation. Take the time you need. If you have follow-up questions later, you can email me anytime at akilah@therapywithakilah.com.

  • Sometimes that happens—and it's not a reflection on you or your situation. If I'm not the right therapist for you, I'll do my best to point you toward resources or other therapists who might be a better match.

Your healing matters more than my caseload filling up.

Questions People Ask Before Booking

  • You don't need a script. I'll guide the conversation with questions. All you need to do is show up and be honest about what's going on for you right now.

  • That's completely normal and welcome. Talking about what's been weighing on you can bring up feelings. I'll hold space for whatever comes up.

  • That's what the consultation is for—to determine fit before committing. If I don't think I'm the right therapist for you, I'll be honest and help you find someone who is.

  • Yes. The 20-minute consultation is completely free, with no obligation. You only pay if you decide to schedule your first therapy session.

  • Not at all. The consultation is exploratory. You're free to think about it, talk to other therapists, or take time before deciding. No pressure.

  • If you're asking this question, you're probably more ready than you think. But if you truly need more time, that's okay too. I'll never push you to start before you're ready.

  • No. Everything we discuss is confidential and protected by HIPAA privacy laws. The only exceptions are situations involving harm to yourself or others, which I would discuss with you first.

  • Your therapy is confidential. I won't contact your family, and they won't be notified. You control what you share with them, if anything.

  • Unfortunately, no. I'm only licensed to provide therapy to residents of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Washington, D.C. But I'm happy to help you find a therapist in your state during our consultation if you'd like.

  • Let's talk about it in the consultation. I accept insurance (which can bring your cost to $10-60 per session), offer private pay at $130/session, and have limited sliding scale spots available. There's usually a way to make it work.
